A Vision for Transforming Healthcare: A Conversation with Richard Mitchell

Richard Mitchell is the Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, bringing extensive experience and a commitment to patient-oriented care. In October 2023 he became CEO across the East Midlands NHS Trusts with a combined turnover in excess of £2.4 billion.

Introduction

My name is Richard Mitchell, Chief Executive of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. I recently had the pleasure of joining Suhail Mirza on Voices of Care where we delved into the heart of the challenges and opportunities facing the health and social care sector in the UK. Today, I want to share my perspective on the key points we covered and shed light on the transformative journey we are undertaking at Leicester NHS Trust.

Returning Home with Purpose

Joining the podcast, I reflected on my return to University Hospitals of Leicester, a place I consider home. Having served as the Chief Operating Officer for over four years, the decision to return as Chief Executive was deeply personal. My aim is to make a tangible difference in the services that have played a vital role in the lives of my family and friends.

Workforce Challenges – A Call to Action

Suhail and I delved into the challenges facing the NHS, and I did not shy away from acknowledging the workforce crisis. With over two decades of experience in the healthcare sector, I expressed the urgency of the situation. The ageing workforce, heightened demand, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have brought us to a critical juncture. It is time for action.

Integrated Care Systems – Beyond Hope to Delivery

We discussed the role of Integrated Care Systems (ICS) as enablers for a better future. While recognising their importance, I stressed the need to move beyond hope and into concrete delivery. Collaboration, a key component of ICS, should be grounded in realistic action, not just aspirations.

Prioritising Wellbeing – Foundations of a Healthy Workforce

Wellbeing is at the forefront of our priorities at University Hospitals of Leicester. By focusing on the basics – safe parking, quality food, and improved working conditions – we aim to create an environment where our staff can thrive. Addressing the cost of living and ensuring timely payment are integral to our commitment to comprehensive staff wellbeing.

Inclusivity, Diversity, and Leadership Representation

Our journey toward inclusivity and diversity is ongoing. Initiatives such as strengthening networks, implementing reverse mentoring, and aspiring to a leadership team that mirrors our diverse communities are central to our strategy. We are committed to ensuring that every staff member feels included and valued.

Ethical International Recruitment – A Global Perspective

International recruitment is approached ethically at University Hospitals of Leicester. Partnering with organisations like BAPIO (British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin), we support doctors and nurses from India, aiming for a mutual benefit that goes beyond filling workforce gaps. Making international colleagues feel welcome and included is a priority for us.

Engaging the Community beyond Traditional Avenues

Community engagement is a key focus, and we are exploring innovative approaches. Establishing a microsite on the High Street to highlight job opportunities and actively engaging with the local community are steps toward creating awareness about the diverse job opportunities available. We see the Trust actively playing its role as an Anchor institution in the local economy.

Strategic Partnerships for Transformation

In the final segment, I outlined a broader vision for University Hospitals of Leicester, emphasising the need for strategic partnerships beyond the NHS. Collaborative efforts with primary care, mental health, local authorities, universities, tech, pharma, the private sector, and the voluntary sector are essential. These partnerships are key to challenging the status quo and delivering the best possible care.

Conclusion

My goal for University Hospitals of Leicester is to take an integrated approach to navigating the future, putting an emphasis on staff wellbeing, promoting inclusivity, and developing strategic partnerships. We are moving in the right direction as a team to provide better healthcare services. Look forward to hearing more thought-provoking discussions about the state of healthcare in season 3 of Voices of Care, which I am thrilled to be back for.
